Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 519) Wisdom

“She is going to fall.” Stephen says as he starts to walk toward the iron spiral staircase that winds its way upward with connections to each level of walkways.

“No, Stephen.” Zsofia says as she grabs his arm stopping him. “As unstable as the platforms are, you stepping on the staircase may be too much for it.”

“I can’t just stand here and watch her fall. Someone needs to steady the cables to keep the platform from moving so much.” He says, as he looks Zsofia in the eyes, she seems to read his thoughts and nods that she understands.

“Okay, I know, but we will have to go another way.” She does not adjust the gaze of her eyes or the loving look in them until she glances at her grandfather.

“No Zsofia, we all need to stay together.” Laszlo pleads as he takes her by the hand to hold her back.

“Grandfather, we have to help her. Whatever it is she is trying to do, we cannot step back and simply allow her to get hurt.

“You are right, I know, but you and Stephen. . . the Guta.” He starts to say as a fearful look comes across his face.

“It is because of the Guta we have to help.” Zsofia says softly. “Klara is doing this for a reason, grandfather. And if she knows a way to free us all from this trap, we need to do our part as well.” Zsofia says with much wisdom and with a nod from her grandfather, Laszlo releases his hold on her.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 518) Rope

Sitting on a bench nearby is Tamas. He is looking up, watching the old woman as she tries to steady the platform. Off to the left is a mechanical humming sound coming from an old generator, which is adding even more difficulty in hearing this unrestrained conversation.

“What is she doing up there?” Stephen asks as he looks around at the various steps and closest doorways to the area where she is standing.

“She’s after the rope.” Laszlo says as he looks down at his hands.

“Rope? What rope?” Zsofia asks as she touches her grandfather’s arm.

With a loud snap followed by a high-pitched screeching sound, a section of the platform, only a short distance from where Klara is standing, falls away crashing down on the decking of the third floor pathway. Stephen and Zsofia heard this exact sound just before entering the conservatory and it is now obvious the unstable walkway is rapidly falling apart.

“That landing may give way at any moment.” Stephen says as he watches the old woman steady herself. “What the hell is she trying to do?” He asks as he watches her but directs his next question to Laszlo. “Where is this rope you’re talking about?”

He then sees it, the item in such demand that an old woman is willing to risk her life for it. Hanging from the platform, where the suspension cable attaches to the decking, and to Klara’s right, is a long thick rope with a straight cut end that has slightly frayed over time.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 517) Genuine

As soon as Stephen and Zsofia’s feet touch the main floor of the entrance hall, there is a loud sound in the conservatory, as if something heavy fell from high above. Laszlo’s words are inaudible as he once again yells an angry phrase. This time they hear a reply and it is from Klara.

“If you have better idea’s then speak them!” The old woman yells from where she is standing on the fourth floor walkway of the conservatory.

The iron supports are squeaking as she moves and the entire suspension of the section she is on is swinging back and forth, as she holds on tightly to the railings.

“Grandfather, what is going on?” Zsofia quizzes as she rushes to his side.

The old man turns, taking his granddaughter in his arms holding her tightly. This moment is genuine and filled with strong emotions.

“Why did you run off? I was so worried about you.” He says in a harsh yet loving way.

“I had to find Stephen.” She replies without any hesitation.

There is a brief pause in the conversation between Zsofia and her grandfather. They stand facing each other, looking eye to eye until Laszlo nods yes with understanding as he moves his head up and down.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 516) Pulling

Zsofia pulls herself to Stephen so tightly that it sends a sharp pain through his injured side causing him to wince in pain and Zsofia instantly pulls back.

“I am so sorry; I didn’t mean to hurt you.” She says as she holds his arm.

“It’s alright.” He responds but even he can hear the lie in his words.

“I’ve been trying to find you, I got turned around and,” She pauses as she stops to listen carefully and then whispers, “Now that we have found each other, we need to get downstairs.”

Once again, she looks up at him in this extreme darkness as she stares into his eyes. He does not even have to look at her because through her touch, he can tell she is pleading with him. Leaning slightly to tip his head out of the small inset they are standing in, he glances down the hall in the direction of the main staircase that will lead them to the ground level.

With one quick glance down the hall in the opposite direction, Stephen takes Zsofia’s hand and together they promptly make their escape. As they approach the staircase, they hear loud voices coming from the conservatory.

“That’s grandfather, he sounds angry.” Zsofia says as she picks up the already fast pace, pulling Stephen along with her.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 515) Games At Play

“I don’t care anymore.” Stephen grumbles now hoping his time has come. “I’ve lived in your shadow my entire life!” He yells as he marches forward and lightning flickers again. “Come on! Just do it!” He challenges.

“Shhhh!” Zsofia says as she jumps out at him placing her hand over his mouth, pulling him into a small alcove in the wall. “What are you doing?” She questions nervously.

Looking into her eyes, Stephen sees nothing but fear. Her pupils are wide and the whites of her eyes red from lack of sleep, as she keeps her hand to his lips. They are standing only inches apart as they stare at each other without blinking. Slowly Zsofia shakes her head back and forth and then tears well up in her blue eyes.

As if a wave of compassion covers him, Stephen’s temper calms and he takes her in his arms. She is trembling and her skin is cold to the touch as he pulls her in tight. He has no idea why she is alone but it is apparent to him that she too is confused about what has happened. He thinks to himself that maybe she did not leave him after all; maybe she too is a victim of the games at play here.

“What’s going on?” He questions as he looks out at the dark hall.

“I. . . I’m not sure.” Zsofia says in a weak and quivering voice. “Tamas was running, I went after him, I heard you yell out and. . . everything went black.”

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 514) The Corridor

The clamminess of the dwelling is prominent and thick as it encompasses the halls and conservatory of the manor. Stephen has been standing here in this dark yet open spot, for several fearful minutes but to him, it feels as if an hour or more has passed.

He cannot fathom taking another strike from the devilish creature that is in control of the lives here. With his newfound knowledge of the past and of this horrid folktale come to life, he now understands why the demise of his great-uncle was such a welcomed event for friends and family. If the torture he felt today was the same as what his uncle endured, over and over, day after day, and for many months. Then death would indeed feel like a blessing and a relief.

Light from the storm flickers in through the window and for that split second it illuminates the hall brightly. Stephen is not fully convinced that he is alone, but he did not see the monstrous beast, nor did he see any of his friends.

“I’ve got to get to the conservatory.” He mumbles to himself.

He is angry with the others for leaving him behind, but most of all hurt that not even Zsofia stayed by his side. The depressive state and anxious actions that have been with him his entire life are consuming him now. It is with this rush of anger that he no longer cares what becomes of him as he takes careful and deliberate steps along the corridor.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 513) Separation

As Stephen takes a step to get closer to the window for a better view, his foot hits the bottle of pills causing it to roll slightly. Lightning flashes brightly in through the window and there on the floor he sees his addictive vice.

“There you are.” He says.

Quickly he snatches it up and presses his back up against the wall as if trying to flatten himself to it. Now that he retrieved what he felt was essential, he pours three pills into the palm of his hand, then quickly drops them on his tongue.

“Down the hatch.” He says to himself as he begins to force them down without any liquid.

Almost gagging, he swallows them in a dry harsh and sour manner. As cold and damp as the air has become, he is burning up with terror and apprehension. Just as he straightens up and leans back to observe the activity in the conservatory, the wet and bare sound of pattering feet on the floor run past him. He did not see anyone or anything but the noise was undeniable. The Guta is here in the hallway with him.

Holding his breath, he does not blink nor does he attempt to move in any direction. His body is still aching from the severity of the last attack, which led to his now distant and confusing separation from the group. Why has that happened, how could they just leave him there on the floor alone and vulnerable to the demon?

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 512) Condensation

Once in the hallway, it is apparent the manor has taken on a peculiar and threatening atmosphere. Aside from the heavy rain pouring down outside, there is only silence in the rooms and corridors as Stephen slowly passes by. There are no voices to follow nor lights to see by and he feels as if hands are reaching out, brushing against his clothing ever so slightly.

The thought of this actually happening has him reaching a panicked state. He trips and falls causing the ever-present bottle of pills to slip out of his pocket and roll across the floor, clattering and tumbling its contents inside. This is quite a welcomed sound for during his dreamlike experience, he feared he had lost them completely.

On his hands and knees, he searches in the dark patting his hands on the cold floor as he tries to locate the bottle that is now somewhere in the shadows of the hall. Moving to the right he feels the coolness of the large stones that make up the outer wall closest to the conservatory. Running his hands past the stones, he begins inching his way along the wall.

“Where is everyone?” He whispers to himself as he glances out the window to view the conservatory.

Standing just inside the glass, on the suspended walkway of the second floor, he sees Klara. She is looking at the levels above her as if contemplating on how to reach them. Oddly enough, the enclosed garden is well-lit, for he can see her as plain as day behind the thick condensation that has gathered on the window.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 511) The Open Door

Slowly rolling to his knees, Stephen supports himself on the table in order to stand up. Grabbing his side, he gradually manages to gain his footing but is dizzy and still disoriented from the episode that took place here. What exactly happened, he is not sure of and the only thing he wants to do now, is find the others. Most of all, he needs to find Zsofia.

Not knowing if what he experienced was a dream or some sort of out-of-body experience, he fears the anonymity of the manor. It frightens him to the bone to think about the dark void that seemed to be consuming him. Still feeling shaken, he is not so sure that for a few seconds, he had not died.

Stumbling across the room, he falls against the wall for support and then leans around the frame of the door as he peers into the adjoining empty bedroom. Disappointed that he finds himself completely alone, he draws in a shallow breath as he begins to walk toward the open door to the hallway.

The sense of urgency he feels for finding the others is not merely because he is alone, but out of concern for the safety and lives of the people he considers to be his only friends. If he was dreaming, or hallucinating, who was the woman screaming for him and if it was Zsofia, where is she now?

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 510) Suffocating

Stephen spins around trying to locate the woman, who he believes to be Zsofia, as she runs along the conservatory platforms above him. However, now the blackness surrounding him is darker than the night as it clouds over the very last bit of light around him. His breaths become rapid and he believes this is what it feels like to drown. His need to find Zsofia is so great that he falls to his knees as his eyes fill of lonely suffocating tears. All the light is now gone and a rushing sound, louder than anything he has every heard, floods around him. He begins to feel he has become part of whatever this obscure darkness is.

“Nooooo!” He screams at the top of his lungs and suddenly as if he is falling from a great distance, he awakens on the rug of the second floor sitting room.

Opening his eyes wide and fearful, he sees the flickering light of candles on the table near him. The room is quiet and empty of any guests and rain is blasting at the windows with great force.

“Zsofia?” He says as he sits up wiping tears from his cheeks.

Turning to look toward the fireplace, he now feels a sharp pain in his side that nearly takes his breath. He remembers watching the demon approach him before feeling more pain than he has ever experienced. Turning back, he looks toward the door to the bedroom that Zsofia and Tamas escaped too. At least, that is what he hopes, that they escaped unharmed.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 509) Dread

“What the hell is happening?” Stephen whispers to himself as he reaches for his pills.

His pockets are empty and his vice for fear and anxiety is now missing. Staring into the darkness that has erased where he has been, he knows something is there watching and following.

“Am I dead?” He questions to himself as an overwhelming dread rushes through him like a wave of torment.

“Stephen!” He hears a familiar voice yell.

The female voice, which in his mind he cannot attach to a face, is coming from above and he stops to look up at the many layers of suspended platforms that cross overhead. The farther up the darker the shadows and the negated blackness begins to swallow the area as it closes in on him from all directions.

“Stephen, help me!” The woman cries out again as the platform she is on squeaks of metal against metal due to the movement of her running.

“Where are you? Who are you?” He yells as he looks up turning around trying to see in the dimming light.

A sweet scent fills his senses with hints of berries and citrus. He recognizes this aroma so well that Zsofia’s image instantly flashes into his mind’s eye and the love he feels for her brings tears to his panicked eyes.

“Zsofia?” He questions under his breath. “Zsofia!” He yells.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 508) A Void

In this dream state, the dim lights at the base of the trees in the conservatory create a muted and mystical glow throughout the entire encased room. The plantings seem to tower over Stephen as if they are twice the size he remembers them to be. The waterfall at the far corner of the garden has a full rushing sound to it unlike the gentle trickle of water he has grown to recognize.

“What is going on?” He says to himself for he is confused and feeling dizzy as if everything around him is blurred and disconnected.

It is now at this strange moment, Zsofia pop’s into his mind as he tries to envision the features of her face and the sweet scent of her hair, but nothing is coming to him. It is very odd that he knows of her, seems to know what he is missing, yet cannot recollect anything about her. How could he forget such things? It is as if she was a character in a dream and once awake, the memory is fading. Nervousness has fallen over him as he slows the pace at which he is walking.

Stephen shakes his head as he continues to walk through the incredibly overgrown plantings and unkempt ornamentals. The small creeks, which are the life force to the many species of vegetation planted here, are rushing much faster than the soothing trickling sounds of a slow peaceful runoff. Pausing, to look back in the direction he came from, there is absolutely nothing but blackness, a void, complete silence.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 507) A Mission

Walking through a dark misty substance hanging in the air much like a heavy mist mixed with smoke, Stephen finds himself on the path from the gatehouse to the manor. He has no idea why he is here or how he came to be on this darkened hillside. The moon is full as thick clouds pass in front of it changing a brightening landscape to a dimming and mysterious one. The movement from one extreme to the other does not allow for Stephens eyes to adjust quick enough to focus on any one thing.

Looking in the direction of the manor, its shadowed walls appear to loom and tower as if twice as tall as he recalls it to be. His steps are methodical as he follows the large flat stone surface until it merges with the front entrance of the massive dwelling.

Without pausing, he pushes the door open and steps inside the manor and as if angry, slams the door behind him. This aggressive action causes a loud echo to reverberate throughout the entrance hall but again, he marches forward as if on a mission. He keeps thinking to himself that something is amiss for he does not truly feel as if he is in control of his actions.

“Am I dreaming?” He says aloud as he pushes the door to the conservatory open so hard it sounds as if he nearly cracked the wood frame.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 506) Vulnerable

As Stephen turns toward Zsofia, he sees she is near the door to the adjoining bedroom when she stops and looks back at him. This is when a blow of incredible force plunges into Stephen’s side dropping him to the floor on his knees. He begins to cough from the horrific pain shooting through his liver and ribs as he holds his side in agony.

Never before in his life has he experienced such a paralyzing feeling. The pain is beyond anything he could ever imagine. Huddled on the floor, helpless and vulnerable, he cannot take in a breath and he feels as if his lungs are collapsing. He is doing all he can to gasp for a breath but the air will not come and the pain is too great. He knows without a doubt, he is losing this fight.

All efforts to gain his footing are impossible as he rolls forward falling hard onto his left shoulder before his head hits the floor. The coldness of the room sends shivers throughout his entire body as he lays powerless. More disturbing to him than his own misfortune is the last thing he hears. It is Zsofia, she is screaming his name, over and over, before fading away into a darkness that frightens and consumes him.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 505) His Focus

“What’s going on, Stephen?” Zsofia questions as she wraps an arm around her brothers waist to hold him steady.

She also takes hold of the back of Stephen’s shirt by clutching the fabric tightly in her hand. Tamas continues to look forward with a stunned expression as Klara finally makes eye contact with Stephen. The look in his eyes must be obvious for she immediately turns toward the door.

“What is it, Stephen? What do you see?” She whispers in her crackling voice as she turns back to look at him.

“It has crossed the barrier. . . the Guta is in the room.” Stephen says in a low voice without deterring his focus from the creature that is slowly, in a hesitant manner, coming toward him.

Stephen reaches back and holds Tamas by the arm but his young friend begins to cry out in fear. The sound of his voice is of pure terror as he breaks free from Stephen and Zsofia’s clutches. He runs straight for the bedroom and disappears into the dimness of the room. It is obvious the Guta is not interested for it continues, without blinking, to move forward now only a few feet from Stephen.

“Tamas!” Zsofia screams to her brother as she watches his reaction to what she cannot see. “Stephen what is it?” Zsofia yells as she runs after her brother and at this moment, with Zsofia frightened and running, Stephen makes a mistake and diverts his focus from the demon to her.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 504) Entering

“Here!” Stephen says to Laszlo.

When the old man looks up, Stephen tosses the locket to him. Once in his hand, Laszlo pops it open and stares at the faded image contained therein. He wipes his nose with his fingers and clears his throat as he continues to look at the object that seems so small in his open palm, yet so heavily weighted by sentiment.

“You can have it.” Stephen says as he watches the old man’s methodical moves.

Up to this point, Stephen has been very engrossed with the locket, so much so that he has not noticed Tamas, with his back to the group, is now standing. The young man begins backing up to where Zsofia and Stephen are standing. Only once he bumps into them does he gain their full attention.

“Tamas? What is it, are you ok?” Zsofia questions as she takes his hand, she feels how badly he is trembling.

Her brother does not speak a word as his other hand raises and he points toward the hallway. Stephen follows the direction with his eyes and knows the others do not see it, he knows they are blind to what Tamas is reacting too.

“Klara?” Stephen says as he observes the Guta entering the room. “Klara?” He questions again.

The elderly woman looks up from staring at the locket that is holding Laszlo’s attention as Stephen reaches out for Tamas. In a fluid movement, he pulls Zsofia and her brother back as he steps in front of them.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 503) Never Let Go

Closing his eyes, Stephen snaps the locket containing his grandmother’s photo shut and squeezes it with anger in his hand. He hates the woman he never knew, he is glad she is dead and wishes she had suffered longer for because of her, many individuals have done that very thing. They suffered with the torment and fear the Guta engulfs in its prey. Squeezing the personal item of this malicious ancestor in his hand, he wishes it would shatter into thousands of pieces.

In learning what he has about his ancestors, and with much regret and sadness because of it, he knows what he must do to bring this nightmare curse to the proper end. Foremost, he knows he must protect the individuals he has grown to care about the most. He now realizes this is exactly what Klara had told him during their first meeting together and obviously, she was right.

If the Guta is indeed after him, he must distance himself from his friends in order to keep them from falling victim. He must force them as far away from him as possible and not just for this moment, but probably forever. That is if he himself somehow manages to survive.

This is heart wrenching, a disaster in his life, the woman he feels truly loves him for who he is must be protected and to do this, he must push her away. Never in his life has such a connection been so strong or felt as right as the one he has with Zsofia. With the warmth of her body pressed next to his, her movement is soft and easy, his anger grows as he fights back the urge to hold her tightly and never let go.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 502) Her Eyes

“Oh I can assure you, if I had such power it would not have taken this long to find us here, at this moment.” The old woman grumbles as she takes a seat next to Laszlo. Her eyes are piercing as she looks directly at Stephen. “I am not your enemy, Istvan. That monster from your past, the one here in this house, it is all you should fear.” She points toward the hall.

“Listen, we need to calm down and stick together. Everyone is tired and. . . well there is no other way to say it, we are trapped.” Zsofia says as she walks over to stand next to Stephen.

Looping her arm though Stephen’s arm, Zsofia pulls herself to him, then gently reaches up and turns his head toward her. With them both facing each other, he can see the expression in her eyes. He sees an understanding and even though her face is serious and calm, her eyes are smiling and he feels himself relaxing. Softly she kisses his cheek and then leans her head on his shoulder as they stand near the fire together.

Stephen is overcome with emotion for his fair-haired friend and is doing all he can to refrain from showing his true feelings. He loves Zsofia. There is no doubt in his mind that he does which makes him feel horrible in what he believes he must now do.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 501) Eccentric

“Tamas, how did you get here, in this room?” Stephen asks.

He hears the quivering of anger in his own voice and he notices Klara expressionless face as she turns to look at him. Looking up from his task, Tamas points to Klara and then goes back to setting candles in a neat row on the table.

“We came here,” the old woman says as she waves her hand from Laszlo to Zsofia, “because you had left the night before to look for Tamas. You are the one that came here first, we simply followed.”

“I realize that, but how did you find Tamas and bring him to this alleged secure room?” Stephen waves his hand in the air then pauses and shakes his head as he almost laughs. “This all looks like it was well planned out to me.” He says as he glares at Klara.

“What are you saying, Stephen?” Zsofia questions as she sits down again next to Tamas.

Stephen stands up and walks over to the fireplace where he pulls the small locket from his pocket and opens it. Peering at the face in the faded photo, he feels hatred for the woman he knows to be his deceased grandmother. In a calmer tone than before, he begins to speak.

“I can’t help but feel that this is all a game drummed up by an old eccentric woman.” Stephen says harshly as he looks up at Klara surprised to see her responding to his comment with a grin.

Shadows Of Guta (Excerpt 500) Orchestrated

In his mind, Stephen replays what Klara just said. “Blood of the one that issued the curse must be given as an offering.” With his grandmother gone, Stephen is the only living member of her bloodline. He can hear his heartbeat growing louder as the thumping in his ears begin to pulse and a warm flush of anxiety washes over him. He knows where this conversation is leading and he feels foolish for not realizing it earlier. His mind begins to race through the events of the past few months.

Has he been purposely brought here as an offering to free the Guta? Has all of this, the death of his great-uncle, the trip from his home in the states, the events of tonight, have they all been planned and orchestrated by this mysterious old woman? She never answered his question about Tamas. She never explained how he went from missing to being asleep and safe in the adjoined bedroom. The strike of a match stirs him from his thoughts.

“There, that is a little better.” Zsofia says as she carries a lit candle to the fireplace placing it on the thick stone mantel.

“Light.” States Tamas as he holds another candle out for his sister to ignite.

Watching this interaction, Stephen begins to dwell on what motives are driving the events that have taken place since he came here. If Klara is indeed up to something, how can he ensure his friends will remain safe?
