The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 508) The End

Any doubts or reservations Lyla may have had are abandoned as she is held in the strength of Crispin’s arms. Both find themselves enveloped in more love and passion than either has ever known.

The warmth of Crispin’s lips near Lyla’s ear sends a fiery spark of energy through her body that he too feels in response. In a delicate loving manner, he softly speaks:

“May thou love me and as the sun follows its course, may thou follow me. As light to the eye, as bread to the hungry, as joy to the heart, may thy presence always be with me, oh one that I love.”

The End

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 507) Devoted

Fixed on each other, Lyla and Crispin stand upon the long stone path, hand in hand, not doubting their love or questioning their sincerity. Lyla does not know how, but Crispin has brought her to this beautiful place. Smokey weaves in and out around their legs as she too feels at ease here.

The surroundings are a setting Lyla knows all too well from her dreams. It is a location she recognizes and is familiar with and at one time promoted fear within her. However, that feeling and lack of understanding no longer exists. She knows this is where they will spend the rest of their days together as companions, as lovers, and as builders of their own destiny. Oddly enough, she has a sense of contentment about her. It is as if she has indeed returned home.

With passion and delight, Crispin pulls Lyla to him as they hold each other in the radiance of the bright sunshine. This devoted connection between them is complete and what was to come to be, is now realized and fulfilled.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 506) Just Believe

Standing in front of her, Crispin slowly spins Lyla around to face in the direction of the dwelling behind them. It is not the small cottage where they fell asleep, but a larger version of the same structural design and detail. Flowers spill out of window boxes and a nearby pool of clear water ripples from the constant flow of a low rambling waterfall. Large white rocks stand in the distance offering a bright contrast to the greenery that surrounds them.

“Welcome home, Lyla.” Crispin says as he stands beside her, holding her at the waist.

“This is still a dream, isn’t it?” She questions with doubt in her voice, then laughing as these words leave her lips, “I fell asleep on the bed and now I’m dreaming, right?”

“No,” Crispin grins as he shakes his head. “This is very real, Lyla.”

“But. . . ?” she starts to ask.

“No need to question it, just believe in it.” He replies as he takes both of her hands in his.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 505) Our Home

“You can open your eyes.” Says Crispin as he runs his fingers along Lyla’s chin. The murkiness around them is still there but soon begins to diminish. Lyla can now see Crispin clearly. He is standing in front of her, facing her and he greets her with a wide smile. The feeling of floating has stopped and she looks down at the stone path below her feet.

The hazy misty smoke that surrounds them begins to float away. Starting at their feet it pulls back and clears rather quickly. Shaking her head slightly, she finds herself standing where she has stood before in many dreams and visions. Out in front of her are hills of green and clusters of wildflowers in bloom speckled along the land. The sky is a brilliant color of blue, flecked with dabbles of white puffy clouds that drift slowly past the brightness of the sun.

“What is this?” she questions as she looks around at the gorgeous surroundings. There is no deep ravine or cliff to fall from only miles of tranquil landscape.

“This is home,” says Crispin, “this is our home.”

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 504) Foggy Cloud

“Where are we going?” Lyla asks as she feels Crispin’s hand in hers. It is not the interlocked hold they had as they fell asleep, but one of him in front of her, guiding her along. He is gently pulling her through this foggy cloud of shadows and at times, she feels a floating sensation as the wetness of the air moistens her face.

“You will soon see.” Crispin replies.

“This is a dream; I know this is a dream.” Lyla mumbles.

“Dreams can come true.” Says Crispin as they stop moving and seem to be drifting slightly above the ground.

“Where are we?” she asks as she increases her grip on his hand still unable to see anything around her.

Fear is seeping into her mind because this journey feels so real, unlike her typical dreams of late where she knows she is dreaming. This one actually gives her the impression it is truly happening and she finds herself very much afraid of the darkness. The nightmare she had of Quinn forcing her over the cliff is strong in her thoughts. She cannot bear to revisit that experience once again for it too felt real, as real as this does now. What if this is truly happening and what if Quinn is not dead after all?

“I am here with you.” Crispin says as a response to her squeezing his hand. He knows she is afraid, he can feel it in how she is holding his hand and by the sound of her voice.

“Let go of reality, Lyla.” He says in a soft echoing tone. “You can trust me.” They seem to have stopped traveling in this strange and curious hollowness.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 503) Watch Over You

“I am suddenly very tired.” Lyla says as she picks a red grape from the fruit tray and pops it into her mouth. She leans back on the sheets stretching her arms above her head and looks at Crispin. “You need to rest as well.” She grins as she takes his hand.

“Yes, I still feel a bit lethargic and need more time to heal.” He states as he looks over at the big fluffy cat sleeping at their feet. “She seems to have the right idea.” He grins as he pulls Lyla closer to him. “Let me watch over you this time.” Crispin says as they lay down together on the bed. Lyla is secure in Crispin’s arms as he holds her firmly, as if protecting her from something unseen.

“I feel so safe with you.” She whispers as she closes her eyes while caressing his arm with her fingers. Crispin grins slightly as he holds her tight. She slips her hand into his and once he feels her body relax, he knows she has drifted off to sleep. Only then does he too close his eyes.

It is now very quiet, a few hours have passed and night has come. Along with it, a dense gloomy mist has crept in covering the land with its wet and darkening shroud. Grass and plants become shiny and moist from the heaviness of the air.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 502) Time Ticks Away

“I feel as if I’ve known you my entire life,” Lyla whispers near his ear and then kisses his cheek. They both feel the energy between them become even stronger than before. “Is this how it feels when soul mates find each other?” She questions.

“I believe it is.” Crispin smiles as he slides the shirt she is wearing off her shoulder, kissing her skin softly. Lying back, she pulls him to her holding him as close as she possibly can and they communicate with unspoken words as time ticks away.

Much later, a distant clock chimes the current hour. Smokey has joined the couple and is sleeping at the corner of the bed near Lyla’s feet. Leaning up, Lyla takes both glasses of orange juice from the tray, handing one to Crispin. In true fashion, he proposes a toast.

“May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.” He grins and they both drink to the toast.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 501) Your Eyes

“Several times during the night I remember waking up, only for small short segments, but there you were.” Crispin says as he studies her face. “You were right beside me, watching over me the entire time. You looked so worried, so caring, and I was too weak to reassure you.” He slides his fingers along her jaw line and down her neck. “With your eyes, you spoke to me. It was the love in your eyes that made me fight, Lyla. I fought harder than I ever have before.” Crispin’s energy is low and his body drained from the ordeal.

Sitting up on her knees, Lyla wraps her arms around his neck, pulling him to her as she holds him in a protective manner. She was so afraid for him and he is right, she stayed with him through every moment, heard each heartbeat, and felt each breath that he took. Never in her life has she experienced a bond like this with anyone, in no way has she known this much love. Never before has she felt so helpless, troubled and unsettled.

“I would never leave you, Crispin.” She says softly as she leans back to make eye contact. “I never will.”

“It is your love that took the pain away, Lyla. It is you who saved me.” Crispin smiles and Lyla grins as they stare at each other.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 500) Are We Okay

“I was so worried about you, to be honest, I still am. Are you sure you’re okay?” Lyla questions while cupping Crispin’s face with both of her hands as she studies his expression. “Are you sure we are okay?”

“I know for a fact, my love, that we are okay.” He smiles as he slides his hands from her shoulders to her waist. “Last night, or maybe early morning,” he pauses. “I’m not sure, everything was a blur and running together,” he smiles, “but I know it was still raining and dark. I awoke and looked into your eyes and I realized something at that moment.”

“What?” Lyla questions as she continues to hold his face. She is so happy to see him healthy and smiling, but he is still slightly weak and in need of rest, as is expected.

“You Lyla, you have the eyes of a Fetch.” He says as he tips his head down to her eye-level. Gazing deeper, as if speaking to her soul, he is very serious. His eyes are mesmerizing to her as she lovingly meets his gaze. Maybe it is because they are being so serious that she cannot stifle her smile.

“Oh? And how’s that?” she laughs for she knows he must be joking about her having such a talent, but Crispin remains very resolute and calm.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 499) Happy Eyes

“I brought you some fruit and juice, we need to build your strength up.” Lyla says as she looks at the gauze on Crispin’s shoulder. “Here, sit down and let me change this out.” Lyla sits with Crispin on the edge of the bed and slowly peels the gauze away from his skin. To her surprise, his wound has closed and is healing nicely and at an extremely fast rate. A stunned expression crosses her face as she glances from his shoulder to his face a few times.

“How?” she questions as she gently pulls the medical tape from his arm to remove the dressing completely. “The pills Marnie took, the wound, everything. . . you almost died!” She says as she looks at him with wide questioning yet happy eyes.

“You are correct. I have to admit I was initially concerned about the wound and once I realized what Marnie had done to herself. . .” His voice trails off has he holds Lyla at the shoulders. “She had a severe wound and when I realized she overdosed on medications as well, I was not sure if I had the strength to pull this one off.” He stares at her intently without wavering.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 498) Tears Of Joy

“I’ve missed you so much.” Lyla says as she holds onto Crispin’s arms, her back pressed up next to him, he kisses her gently on the neck.

“I’ve missed you too,” he replies as she turns around still incredibly close as they hold each other.

Grinning, she looks into his brilliant green and glistening eyes. The life was almost gone from them and now they are clear and vibrant just as they should be. His appearance is back to the healthy strong person that he is and she is so very thankful for his swift recovery. Reaching up she places her hands on either side of his face as she pulls him toward her for a long fiery kiss.

“I thought I was going to lose you.” She says still holding her eyes closed as she pulls back from his lips. Keeping her eyes shut is the only way she knows to stop the tears of joy that she feels are about to flow freely.

“Never,” he replies as he kisses her again.

Lyla then pulls back gently as she looks at him. A tear streaks down her left cheek and Crispin softly kisses it away. She pulls herself to him resting her head against his chest as they quietly stand there, holding each other, his heartbeat strong in her ear.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 497) Strong Presence

Crispin has become the most important person in Lyla’s world and she cannot bear the thought of all the pain he has suffered recently. Has it ever been this bad before, has he endured such anguish in the past? Thinking of the events and watching as he took on the distress of Robert and Marnie, makes the compassion she has for him even greater than before.

As Lyla walks into the bedroom she sees the covers turned back exposing a small bloodstain on the pillow and bottom sheet. This is actually good for his bleeding must have stopped soon after he fell asleep but Crispin is not there. She looks around the room and down the hall; she has no idea where he has gone. Coming back from the kitchen, she knows he was not in any of the rooms she passed along the way, so where might he be?

“Crispin?” Lyla says softly as she looks down the hall.

With no reply, she walks over to the bed and sets the tray of fruit and juice on the small night table. Rolling up the sleeves of Crispin’s shirt that she is so comfortable in, she leans over and takes a closer look at the blood on the bedding.

Very quietly, Crispin is watching from the doorway. He slowly comes up behind her wrapping his arms around her waist and nuzzles at the nape of her neck then touches his face next to hers. Lyla jumps slightly then realizes how wonderful it is to be here in his loving enveloping and very strong presence.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 496) Basic Things

“You hungry pretty girl?” questions Lyla softly as Smokey responds with her typical dry raspy meow. Rummaging around in the kitchen cabinet, Lyla finds a can of tuna. “Hum, we need to get some food here for you little one.” She pours half of the tuna into a small bowl and sets it on the floor where Smokey begins to eat.

Looking at the time, Lyla realizes it is not morning at all, but mid afternoon. She picks out several pieces of fruit and pours orange juice into two small glasses. Setting the items on a tray, she carries it with her as she goes back to the bedroom to check on Crispin.

Walking from room to room, she realizes how quiet it is here and how comfortable she truly feels. There is a sense of peace and calmness about the place that she cannot quite explain. After all, it is a simple structure, well dressed with uncomplicated furnishings, and bits of whimsy.

Maybe that is what appeals to her most of all. The basic things are all she needs. However, even with this contentment surrounding her, she is unable to stop the intense worry she has for the man she loves.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 495) Recovery

As if traveling with the passing storms, the horrific night is finally over. Lyla awakens next to Crispin and for nearly an hour, she silently watches him sleep. He looks peaceful and is no longer breathing erratically as he had the past several hours. Cool to the touch, he is no longer suffering a high fever.

The night seemed to go on forever as Lyla stayed by him tending to his needs and begging him to pull through. The color has returned to his face and for the first time since the incident, she knows he is recovering from the trauma. Realizing this is just the beginning of his recovery, she wishes not to disturb him.

As she attempts to get out of bed, Crispin slowly rolls over on his side facing away from her. She stops in place and hesitates to move again as she holds her breath. As much as she wants to talk to him, hold him, and see that he is indeed better, she knows it would be wrong to wake him.

After waiting a few minutes, she shifts again in a very slow and deliberate manner, as she gets out of bed and leaves the room. Smokey follows as she walks through the cottage and as they approach the kitchen, the cat begins to meow loudly.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 494) Congratulations

“Welcome home,” states Severo as he wipes tears from his eyes and opens his arms for a hug from Destry. “Welcome home!” yells everyone in unison as they smile and clap their hands exchanging hugs and handshakes as the group mingles happily.

“Congratulations are in order as well, Ms. Destry and Marcus will marry soon!” says Severo as if he is making a speech on the town square. The group cheers once again and the opening of wine bottles is just the beginning of a long well needed party.

The luggage is unloaded from the car by three of the men and they follow Destry as the group enters the house. It is obvious the furnishings are just as Crispin promised. Everything is still in place and undisturbed even the small paper pad Destry’s grandmother used for jotting down notes, is still sitting on the table near the door.

Hours later, as the warm welcoming of Destry’s return winds down, she and Marcus say goodnight to their wonderful staff and step outside to watch the sunset. Holding her in his arms, Marcus feels at home here with Destry as their life together begins.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 493) I Respect Him

The men look over the roof of the car at each other, step back from the vehicle, and stay quietly in their position until Marcus slowly begins the drive up the gravel road. Destry and Marcus look at each other almost in shock, then both smile and begin to laugh as they realize everything is working out perfectly.

“I was so scared there for a moment!” Laughs Destry. “I can’t believe this, Marcus. It’s like a dream come true!” She grabs his hand and gives him a kiss.

“I think we are going to have to ask Crispin to the wedding.” Marcus says happily. “He really set things straight and I respect him for it.” He looks at her for a few seconds then kisses her again. “I love you, Destry.”

“I love you, Marcus.” She replies.

As they pull up to the main house it looks quiet and practically deserted. Marcus shuts the car off and they sit there looking toward the front door in silence. Just as they begin to exit the car, the door of the house opens wide as Severo, followed by all fifty employees, walk out and swarm the vehicle.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 492) Your Ownership

Tired from their long flight and drive from Madrid, Marcus and Destry have finally made it to the vineyard. As they turn off the main road onto the gravel drive, two men approach the car forcing them to stop. With one on each side of the vehicle, Destry looks at Marcus and they both fear the worst. Has this all been an evil ploy?

“Hello?” Questions Marcus, almost sarcastically, as he rolls his window down only a crack.

“Ms. Boucher?” says the man without acknowledging Marcus. He bends down to look into the window of the car.

“Yes?” Destry replies as she looks up at him.

“We are here on behalf of Duff Industries to present you with all legal documents of your ownership to this property. Along with your official items, Mr. Duff has paid any fees and fines that this transaction entailed.” The man says without hesitation. He holds a thick file out in front of him prompting Marcus to roll his window down all the way. Destry looks at Marcus for a moment then reaches out, slowly taking the file.

“Thank you,” she says softly.

“Also, Mr. Duff asked that we meet with Severo and the entire staff here at your vineyard. They are aware of this matter and all are waiting for you and Mr. Olwen at the main house. Kind regards to you, Ma’am.” The man says to Lyla as he shakes her hand. He then looks at Marcus and says, “Sir,” then with a nod continues with, “Good day to you both.”

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 491) Interlocks

Crispin reaches out and in a weak manner pulls Lyla to him. They lie there together in each other’s arms and she finds herself counting the seconds between his breaths. As she watches his face, she looks for any change in expression that may indicate if he is feeling any relief. With her left hand, she interlocks her fingers with his and several minutes later he relaxes once again into a deep sleep.

For three more hours, there are many lulls and outburst as a line of storms push through the area until weakening into light rain showers. Lyla stays at Crispin’s side and still does not sleep as she continues her loving vigil over him. However, as dawn approaches and he relaxes, she is no longer able to keep her eyes open.

With one last glance at the window, she sees a thin line of sunlight streaming through the crack in the curtains. With her hand still holding Crispin’s, she looks at him, then lays her head on the stack of pillows beside him. After only a couple of minutes, she drifts off to sleep. Gently and without knowing it, she tenderly pulls herself as close to him as possible looping her leg over his as she listens to his cadenced heartbeat.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 490) Under Distress

As Lyla glances up, she feels Crispin’s body twitch and he frowns as if in pain. She scoots up in bed so she can be ready if he needs her. Sitting there, she puts her hand on his forehead. He is hot to the touch and sweating, yet shaking as if he is freezing. It is obvious he has a high fever. Quickly crawling out of bed, she runs to the bathroom where she wets a clean wash cloth with cool water. All the while, she wishes she could contact a doctor or someone who knows what he needs in order to beat this. Yet, she understands Crispin’s hesitation for assistance due to his mystical abilities.

Thunder pounds loudly and the ground shakes as she comes back into the room. Crispin is breathing heavy as if under distress and Lyla quickly climbs back into bed. Sitting on her knees, she folds the cloth placing it on his forehead and he pulls back as if it burns.

“I’m so sorry.” She says as she cups his face in her hand, Crispin immediately opens his eyes and she notices they are his natural color. He stares at her for several seconds without changing his facial expression or saying a word. Does he not recognize her? Still holding his face in her hand, Lyla leans in close and looks deep into his eyes. Trying not to blink she says over and over again in her mind, I love you, I love you, I love you.

“Crispin.” She whispers as she holds her stare.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 489) The Anguish

Several minutes later Smokey jumps up on the bed and nuzzles in between Lyla and Crispin’s feet. Lyla continues her sentinel over Crispin as she thinks of the events that have drawn them together. She even reflects on the way things were back when they first met months ago.

She remembers being heartbroken when she thought he was simply using her, for she had already fallen for him. In reality, everything that happened months ago was due to misunderstandings, miscommunication, Quinn’s twisted control and Crispin’s patience wearing thin. Now, recognizing all of this, she wants him to fight even harder to recover.

In witnessing firsthand the anguish he suffers for others, she now realizes how difficult Crispin’s life must be. Even Marnie, he took her pain as she was dying even after he realized what she had done. If anyone were less deserving of such sympathy, it would be her.

Because of Marnie’s deranged attack and overdose of medications, he is enduring far more distress than he should. She fears he may not pull through and worries that this episode might damage him or worse yet, kill him.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 488) Without Him

With an almost nonexistent touch, Lyla runs her fingers along Crispin’s cheek, around his ear, and across his forehead. She continues with this slow delicate and soothing pattern hopeful he finds it to be relaxing. Without opening his eyes, his expression once again looks as if he is trying to smile. Thinking of Crispin, warmth comes over Lyla making her feel light and happy unlike anything she has ever felt before. She has learned so much about him in such a short amount of time, but she feels almost as if they are old friends picking up where they left off.

“Crispin you must recover,” she thinks to herself, “His face is what I see when I close my eyes, and I cannot imagine life without him.”

“I love you.” Lyla says in a soft whisper as she kisses him gently on the forehead.

She lays her head on the pillow next to his and moves closer to him. Very gently she rests her left hand on his chest where she can feel every breath he takes. Watching him intently, thunder crashes down again but she does not have any worry for the storm, Crispin is her only concern and he has all of her attention.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 487) Gasp Of Breath

“Where are we?” Lyla asks as she steps back from the edge. She can feel Crispin’s chest on her back.

“We are at the end of the road.” He replies as he puts his arms around her. The tone of his voice is low and without expression and she feels cold and frightened. As she turns around to face him, she finds herself standing alone on the path. Several feet away is a small dwelling with a heavy black door and green shuttered windows. As she stands there, captive to her surroundings, the door slowly begins to swing open.

Anticipation and nervousness take over Lyla’s emotions as she realizes Quinn is standing just inside the entry, hidden in the shadows of the room. His face is clear and visible as if detached from his body. He is quietly observing her with glaring eyes. She is frightened and this dead man’s expression bites into her sending chills along her spine.

Suddenly he rushes forward and within seconds has Lyla by the arm as he drags her to the edge of the ridge. Rocks and pebbles fall beneath her feet as she stumbles trying to steady her footing. With his hand on the back of her neck, Quinn pushes her off the ledge and she feels herself falling into the eternal misty void!

With a gasp of breath, Lyla is jolted out of her dream as she sees a bright flash followed immediately by a loud crash of thunder. The pounding causes the lamp on the table to rattle and Lyla looks up at Crispin’s face. She is not sure how long she rested but feels it was only a matter of minutes.

He looks so very pale, more so now than when she helped him lay down. Frightened that he may not be alive, she reaches up to touch the side of his face. He opens his eyes ever so slightly but does not focus on her face. It is almost as if he is looking through her. The corner of his mouth rises slightly before he closes his eyes once again.

The Eyes Of A Fetch (Excerpt 486) A Dream

Lyla tries to open her eyes again but this time cannot, or maybe she has opened them but the mist is so thick she can only see blackness. There is no way to tell which way is right or which way is left, if she is standing up or lying down.

“This is only a dream,” she reminds herself as she begins to believe she is floating. The sensation is odd and soon she starts to feel ill with motion sickness. “Crispin?” she says again and now feels his hand in hers. Slowly she flutters her eyelids as she awakens to a vast landscape of hills and valleys. Tiny flowers are in bloom and the sky is a brilliant blue filled with specks of white puffy clouds.

As she turns and looks at Crispin, she realizes they are standing on a walkway near a deep cavernous ridge that drops off into a thick layer of fog creating the appearance it goes on for eternity. The blue sky around them becomes clouded and it begins to darken.
